Australia set to chase global Women’s Box lacrosse glory

Australia’s pioneering Women’s Box lacrosse stars have had their place in history confirmed with World Lacrosse naming Australia as one of ten countries who will compete for the inaugural World Lacrosse Women’s Box Lacrosse Championship in the USA next September.

In the historic announcement, Australia will be joined by Asia Pacific neighbours Hong Kong China and European challengers England, Finland, Germany, Ireland and the Netherlands as they look to take on North American powerhouses the USA, Canada and the Haudonosaunee. The Inaugural Women’s Box Lacrosse World Championship will take place alongside the Men’s Box Lacrosse World Championship from 20 September 2024 to 29 September 2024 in Utica, New York. The format, pools and schedule for both competitions will be announced in early 2024, as well as ticketing plans.

World Lacrosse CEO Jim Scherr summed up the excitement heading into the Worlds, “we are thrilled about the teams competing in our 2024 Box Championship on many accounts. The historic first edition of our women’s box championship is a landmark moment for our sport, and I am excited to see the strong 10-team field introduce our global fanbase to the strength of the women’s box community.”

Australian Women’s Box team hopeful Tegan Brown led to chorus of squad members who were thrilled to hear the news, “we all knew Lacrosse Australia was fully behind nominating a team but to actually see it confirmed in writing was pretty awesome”, said Brown, “there’s been a lot of hard work by players, supporters and coaches happening in the background to help make this happen and to see it made official is just brilliant”.

The announcement is also perfect timing with the squad having just come off of a tough December camp as the players head into Christmas now before meeting again at the 2024 Lacrosse Australian Women’s Box Lacrosse Championships. “The opportunity we have been presented is a chance to be a part of making history for the sport we have all loved our whole lives”, added Brown, “there is just so much excitement and passion in the squad knowing that it is a chance to be part of something special and it shows with every squad member wanting to be part of that history.

The squad will now break and come back together at Nationals, with the squad to be reduced before a final camp in March 2024 leading into the final team announcement also in March 2024.
