Aussies make statement against Italy to seize control of Pool C at U20 World Championships
Australia have taken control of Pool C at the World Lacrosse Womens U20 Championship with a STATEMENT second half to claim a big win over fellow Pool C table toppers, Italy.
With the all-important first position up for grabs, Italy struck first in a cautious opening as both sides took some time to settle into a groove. It wasn’t until after 7 minutes that Australia got on the board with Ocea Leavy continuing her irresistible run of form before Meg Bown gave Australia their first lead. The Australia defence was holding up early, with Nat Eastwood dominating in the cage, and that kept the Italians at bay and it was only a matter of time before Australia found their way through Italian keeper Hannah Gilland’s with Meg Bown adding another and then a run of run of 1 goal and 2 assists from Holly Plummer saw Australian extend their lead at the half.
In the second half, Italy managed to briefly halt Australia momentum, getting the margin back to 4 but Australia responded with a vengeance, scoring the next ELEVEN goals with Miriam Suares-Jury absolutely taking over scoring 4 goals on her own as Bown, Leavy and Dani Cox all bought up hattricks. Marley Dawson had another stellar game in the middle running at 80% on the draw as Lily Harris finished the game off nicely for Australia, with the Aussie’s 18th goal in the final minute to give Australia the commanding win.
Australia now sit atop Pool C and will face Mexico on Monday with a win seeing Australia through as the top seed from Pool C. Italy meanwhile take on Scotland on Monday, looking to sew up 2nd spot and a quarter final berth if Australia can top Mexico.
