ALA Elected Directors - Announcement

The ALA is excited to announce that Janet Jackson and Mark Polden have been elected as Directors to the Australian Lacrosse Association (ALA) Board at the ALA’s AGM on the 26th of November 2019.

Both were re-elected to the ALA Board with Mark serving on the board since 2017 and Jan since 2009.

“I am honoured to be re-elected to the Board of Directors of the ALA”, said Mark following his re-election.

“In support of the overall aim to Grow the Game of Lacrosse in Australia I hope to be able to facilitate this through increasing the number and quality of lacrosse officials throughout the country. Recruitment, Education, Retention and Coaching are the processes I believe we can improve upon to provide the officials Lacrosse will need to enable it to grow unhindered into the future.”

Glenn Morley, ALA President, said “it is great to have two people with such commitment and vast experience to serve on the ALA board and we are looking forward to another busy and rewarding year in 2020.”

The ALA board will meet in December where positions of President, Vice President and areas of responsibility will be confirmed.

Jan Jackson

Jan became involved with lacrosse as a spectator watching her boyfriend playing with Camberwell Glen Iris late 1950s. Jan’s daughter and sons, granddaughters and grandsons play lacrosse.

She became an inaugural Committee Member of Camberwell Women’s Lacrosse in 1979 and was an Office Bearer with Camberwell (1980-2007), Women’s Lacrosse Victoria (1984-2008), Director of Lacrosse Victoria (1996-2008) and Women’s Lacrosse Australia (1989-2009). Jan was elected to the Australian Lacrosse Association Ltd Board in 2009-2015 and Federation of International Lacrosse Women’s Rules Chair in 2012.

She has umpired women’s games at Australian National Championships and Tournaments since 1986. In 1989 she gained International Umpiring Accreditation and umpired at IFWLA World Cups 1993 (Scotland), 1997 (Japan) and 2001 (England) and 1997 European Championships (Stockholm, Sweden). She was Technical Delegate at IFWLA 1989 World Cup (Perth), 1995 Under 19 World Championship (Haverford, USA), 2009 World Cup (Prague, Czech Republic) and 2011 Under 19 World Championship (Hannover, Germany).

Awards received include an150th Anniversary Award (City of Camberwell), 1986 and 2010 Nell Rawlins’ Award (Victorian Lacrosse), 2000 Australian Sports Medal, Janet Jackson Honour Board (Camberwell Lacrosse Club), Life Memberships of Victorian Women’s Lacrosse Association, Australian Women’s Lacrosse Council and Camberwell Lacrosse Club and a Federation of International Lacrosse International Emeritus Umpire Award.

Mark Polden

Mark recently held two concurrent administrative roles in Lacrosse in South Australia, Lacrosse SA Deputy President and South Australian Chief Referee (SACR).

Mark's activities on the Lacrosse SA Board have been predominantly associated with Constitutional and Bylaw upgrades and most recently, in the absence of an elected Director, chairing the Junior Competitions Sub-committee. 

As the previous SACR Mark was busy with mentoring referees in SA, and travelling to interstate championships as either an Assessor of Referees or as the tournament Chief Referee.

Mark has also held roles in Lacrosse in South Australia as Presidents of the Brighton Lacrosse Club and the Australian Lacrosse Referees Association, both of which he is a Life Member. Mark played for the Brighton Lacrosse Club from 1970, with his last game in 1996. with a total of  754 goals in 365 senior games, and won three A Grade/State League Premierships in 1978,79 and 1987. 

As a referee Mark started in 1995 and has officiated in three World Championships (2003 U19 Towson Maryland, 2006 London Ontario, 2010 Manchester England), numerous SA and Australian Championships, and now assess referees and officiates local senior games.
