2018 Southern Crosse Tournament
After 41 matches over 5 days the U19 New Zealand Squad has claimed the Vivienne Parker-White trophy for the first time, defeating Kanto 13 – 6 in the final.
The tournament saw 9 teams compete at the tournament; U19 New Zealand, U20 Kanto & U20 Tokai (Japan teams) and 6 teams made up from the 2019 U19 Australian Women’s squad. New Zealand was the strongest performer throughout the whole tournament, dominating round robin matches and only dropping one match for the entire tournament. This performance came on the back of a strong attacking game with New Zealand scoring a total of 93 goals with 56 against.
The Southern Crosse Tournament was an important part of the 2019 U19 Australian Women’s squad training and preparation and allowed for concentrated coaching, squad bonding and off field information sessions in the lead up to the 2019 FIL U19 Women’s World Championship.
The 2018 Australian Men's squad also attended the Southern Crosse Tournament in preparation for their 2018 FIL Men’s World Championship. To progress their preparation for the same event, the Hong Kong Men’s National Squad also attended which provide the Australian Men’s squad the opportunity to practice and implement important foundation strategies and tactics.
To cap it all off, the 2018 Australian Men’s Squad conducted a development clinic for junior boy’s lacrosse players with close to 50 players arriving at Altona Lacrosse Club on Sunday morning to receive expert coaching by some of Australia’s best players.
This tournament could not be possible without the help of so many volunteers. Firstly a huge thank-you to the Karen Meredith, Paul Mollison, John Morgan, Rhonda Panozzo, Roxanne Leavy, Cheryl Hogan and Jan Jackson who were instrumental in the planning, organisation and delivery of the entire tournament.
ALA would also like to thank the officials and coaches who gave up their time to ensure the players received best experience possible and finally thank-you to the workforce behind the scenes, the parents of the U19 Women’s Squad and local lacrosse members who assisted with billeting players, setting up & packing down the fields daily and of course with the catering to feed the 200+ athletes each day. Lastly a huge thank-you to Mick Connelly & Lisa Ralston (from Lacrosse Pix) for all the great photos that we saw and had access to throughout the tournament.
Many thanks to all who help!
