Darren will present on ‘Developing a strong culture in your club’. Discussing the trademarks, values and behaviours that typify the best performing clubs in Australia, along with the expectations that we place on others and how the ability to have genuine conversations can dramatically strengthen the culture in a club.

Darren began his relationship with Leading Teams as an Assistant Coach with the Carlton Football Club in the AFL under the facilitation of Director, Ray McLean. Darren felt aligned to the Leading Teams model and believed passionately in its ability to produce high performance teams and high performing leaders.

The work Darren was doing with the Carlton Football Club development academy involved facilitating the trademark and behaviours which ultimately led to the decision to leave the AFL and join Leading Teams in 2012.

Darren has a Diploma of Teaching (Primary) from The Latrobe University, is a Supervisory Management graduate from (Leadership Management Australia), has completed a unit in Executive and Life Coaching at Curtin University in WA and is a Level 3 qualified AFL Football Coach.

Darren was a Primary teacher for 10 years in both Western Australian and Victorian Primary Schools.

Darren’s Australian Rules Football coaching career has included:

  • Senior Coach, Wodonga Raiders FC, winning the club's first ever Ovens and Murray Premiership
  • Talent Program Manager for the NSW/AFL which incorporated Assistant Coach of the NSW/ACT Rams in the TAC Cup and the NSW/ACT Sate 18s (National Champions Division 2, 2000).
  • Senior Coach, West Perth Football Club - the team he had captained to a premiership in 1995, being awarded the Simpson Medal. Darren went on to coach West Perth to consecutive Grand Finals in 2002 (Runner’s up) & 2003 (Premiers).
  • He then progressed to the role of assistant coach with the West Coast Eagles and coached the forward line to the club’s 2006 AFL Grand Final success.

In 2009, Darren joined the Carlton Football Club as the Development and Academy Manager, overseeing the future direction of young players, coaches and the club’s VFL Affiliate, the Northern Bullants.

Darren has a proven record in Leadership, winning 7 Premierships in his career as a coach and player. His experience of team dynamics both in education and at all levels of elite sport will prove valuable to attendees.

Leading Teams Director Ray Mclean says, “Darren has the high level communication skills, compassion and decision making skills required to make an excellent facilitator. He was able to cut through the external forces that exist at AFL level to help the young players at Carlton focus on what’s important and as such will be a great asset to both Leading Teams corporate and sporting clients.”
