Mentoring Opportunity for Women in Sport
Australian Womensport and Recreation
It is widely acknowledged that there is an under-representation of women working and volunteering in senior roles in sport.
The Australian Womensport and Recreation Association (AWRA) has launched a Mentoring Program that provides a practical way to encourage participation of women in the workforce and assist them to take the next step in their careers.
The program is suitable for women who are
- middle managers
- elite athletes making a transition to a leadership role
- volunteers aspiring to State or National Boards and
- coaches and referees/officials looking to gain a high level accreditation.
Over the past three years, the Australian Sports Commission has supported AWRA to provide opportunities for over 100 women to form mentoring relationships with senior sport leaders.
Organisations including Bowls Australia, Deaf Sports Australia, Gymnastics Australia, Special Olympics, National Rugby League, Netball Australia, Swimming Australia and Yachting Victoria enrolled women last year. The program was a recent finalist in a national leadership award for Sustaining Women's Empowerment in Communities and Organisations (SWECO).
A quote from one of our 2013 Mentees highlights some of the benefits of the program:
“My life has turned around since I started with my mentor, he has given me confidence, taught me about work, life, balance - although we will never get this right - plus he has given me an insight about myself and my achievements.”
The program is delivered via one face-to-face workshop (held in capital cities) and webinar workshops covering topics including:
- How to be a good mentee
- Making the most of your skills and experience and
- Determining your big picture
E-mentoring through on-line mentoring activities for mentees is available for those restricted by location to attend face-to-face meetings. Translation support is available for women with hearing impairments or language difficulties.
Places fill quickly and last year the program was oversubscribed. The closing date for applications is Wednesday 5 August.
